With HD DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and endless internet videos and streamlined material, the future of DVD subtitles are ever useful and in demand! Subtitles, which are the preferred method of translation of the majority of the world's DVD's, actually have two types; these are SDH DVD subtitles and English subtitles. SDH subtitles include extra information for the deaf and hard of hearing, as SDH stands for just this: Subtitles for Deaf and Hard of Hearing. However most subtitles do contain at least some descriptive phrases either way, so the differences are certainly not always clear-cut between SDH subtitles and subtitles designed for the sole purpose of language translation.

Subtitles are very easily recognized from captions however. The one very standard differentiating factor is that captions move about with varying placement on the screen. Subtitles remain centered at the bottom edge of the screen, sometimes even serving as a humorous addition to the film. For example, a movie character can make it clear that they have "taken notice" of the subtitles, almost like a "slip" that they are aware they are on the screen and this is "just a movie." Other times for humorous effect, subtitles can be present to translate jargon that is slang, inappropriate, or hard to understand even though those who hear can tell what the words are and what the characters are saying. It's as though the director or producer of the film wanted to say, "Yes this character's speech needs to be subtitled because it's too difficult to understand the way he/she tries to say it."

With DVD subtitles, separate frames are placed over pre-existing DVD frames. Afterwards separate languages can be chosen. Or, subtitles can be encoded as an image and placed onto a DVD; think of closed subtitles instead of closed captions.
