When I think of self defense for women, my mind automatically turns to Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. I imagine destroying the un-dead while wearing my cutest clothes and high heels. That's probably not going to happen though, since it's all I can do to kick a soccer ball into a goal. There are self defense classes specifically geared towards women. Many courses teach you what to do if you are attacked, as opposed to a martial arts class for the general population, where you might only learn to fight in a rink.

When you are out walking alone, in a parking lot or somewhere that seems unsafe, don't be distracted by your phone or your iPod. Pay attention to your surroundings. Keep your keys in your hand if you are on the way to your car. You can use those to jab a predator in the eye, if you have to.

Keep in mind that the places that someone is the weakest are his eyes, throat, knees and groin. Those are the areas you should go to first if you need to defend yourself. Maybe while you key him in the eye, you can knee him in the groin. That might give you a couple of minutes to run away or call for help. Kicking his knee out from under him might give you an advantage.

You will want to be very careful to access the situation before you start using these tactics. If he has a gun or other weapon, you don't want to do something that will cause him to use it. Determine if there is some other way to get away from him or get help to you before you decide to kick him in the groin. Many local community centers or colleges offer self defense classes for women. If you take this class, you'll feel better about your ability to protect yourself and stay free of danger.
