Quantum Solace Blu
The most rented DVD of 2009 is summer blockbuster, 'Slumdog Millionaire', according to a survey by LoveFilm.
The heartwarming rags to riches tale tells the tale of an Indian boy in the slums who appears on Who Wants to Be A Milllionaire? It was a runaway success and managed to scoop a massive 8 Oscars as well as proving popular at online DVD rental sites.
Not far behind in second place was the slightly odd comedy by the Cohen brothers, 'Burn After Reading', followed by thriller 'Taken', starring Liam Neeson in third place.
Other flicks featuring in the top 10 were the Disney family favourite, 'Wall-E', 'Quantum of Solace', starring our very own Daniel Craig, and wartime tear-jerker 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'.
Completing the top 10 was 'The Dark Knight', 'Changeling', 'The Reader', and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'.
Mamma Mia!
The survey also showed that the Abba musical smash hit 'Mamma Mia!' was the most bought film of the year.
It was also found that dramas were the most popular DVD rental genre for Brits in 2009.
Quite unsurprisingly, it was found that people were more likely to rent DVDs based in their home town, with Sheffielders being more likely to watch male strippers in 'The Full Monty', and renters in Edinburgh settling down for a bit of 'Trainspotting'.
The wonderful Terry Pratchett adaptation 'The Colour of Magic' was the most popular television series for DVD rental, which pipped 'Gavin & Stacey' to the top slot.
Staying in is the new going out
"Staying in has indeed become the new going out throughout 2009, but it has actually suited film fans down to the ground as they've been spoilt by some of the best films of the last few years," said Fliss White, from LoveFilm DVD rental service.
"Whilst Slumdog Millionaire was the real winner this year across the nation's homes, the success of comedies like the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading shows that despite the recession us Brits are more than able to look on the brighter side of life. We're also clearly a loyal bunch too, supporting locally based films like never before."
