Venus is often referred to as Earth's sister but even though there are some similarities there are also many fundamental differences. Whereas Earth is an inviting blue world teeming with life, Venus is a choked, crushing, oven baked desert.

As Venus is the second brightest celestial object in the night sky it has been observed by humans for millenia and was named by the Romans after their god of love. It was discovered that Venus was very similar in size to Earth and indeed possessed its own atmosphere. It was commonly thought that under its thick clouds lay an exotic world, even as late as the 1950's the esteemed American scientist Carl Sagan speculated that Venus would have a swamp like environment populated with alien life forms.

Those ideas were crushed in 1962 when Mariner 2, the first spacecraft to visit Venus detected baking surface temperatures of 428C (800F). Five years later the Soviet craft Venera 4 revealed an atmosphere composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide and crushing atmospheric pressure. It was clear nothing could exist in this environment.

Studies have shown that a few billion years ago Venus was very similar to Earth with liquid water flowing over its surface. So where did it all go wrong? Well unfortunately for Venus it was just too close to the sun. The water quickly evaporated and intense volcanic activity dumped huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere causing a runaway greenhouse effect. Venus reached the point of no return ending up with the hottest surface temperature of any planet in the solar system.
