Television shows like CSI and NCIS have made the career field of crime scene investigation very popular. It is a broad career field with many different specializations you can choose. If you are thinking about joining the field, the steps on how to become a crime scene investigator (CSI) are discussed below.
Before you enroll in a university program, study and research the actual duties of a CSI. It is not like the television shows portray it. It is actually hard work and long hours. If you have a particular agency you want to work for, find out what their particular job duties and requirements entail.
You will need to have a bachelor's degree for some of the more coveted positions. Make sure that you attend a reputable and accredited criminal justice or CSI program. These will ensure you get the right education in forensic science, law enforcement, investigation, and analysis.
Not all programs will require an internship. Many local police departments offer individual summer internships that will give you an idea of what the job is actually like. This will also help you network with potential employers for after your graduate.
Finally, prepare for the interview and application process. Know about the community and department you are applying to. Don't limit yourself to just local police departments, however. Also, look into private consulting firms and government agencies like the ATF or the FBI.
Being a CSI is a rewarding and challenging career choice. It is hard and arduous work, but the benefits far outweigh the sacrifices.
