Have you seen the amount of adverts on TV for dating websites at the end of December and the start of January? Obviously single people want to find love, romance and companionship in the New Year, and many will want to look for it with online dating, but where do you start, and what is fair to expect? Setting goals is one way of getting started with any project, including online dating, and this article looks at how to set achievable goals. Achievable is the A in SMART goals.
One advert recently has two people bumping into each other in a DVD rental shop and singing about their favourite movies and realising they are right for each other. When I rent DVDs there is very little chat between single customers, and occasional arguments between couples about what to rent. Now this may very well happen in someone else's local DVD rental shop, but not mine. But it is still a great analogy for online dating. The great thing about online dating is that this is essentially what can happen between people, but it doesn't happen in either the real life DVD shop or an online dating site if you don't get there in the first place. Then, when you get there, you have to start interacting with the other customers to see who you click with. When you find a potential date, you have to see about interacting with them out of the shop, and off the site.
There is an element of reasonable expectation here. You might soon get a date with someone in the DVD rental shop; you don't get a date with someone in the DVD! At least, not too soon. The goal here isn't just to get a date; it's the things you have to do on the way to get that date.
Easily achievable Goals to consider:
Choose a dating website
Register for membership
Put up a profile
Put up photographs
Contact other members
Correspond with members that reply
So, you resolve to begin online dating. You should see how much time you can spare and resolve to spend 10-20 minutes every day towards getting started. When you get in the habit of this, you find you get better at it, and you get more done in the same time, or get the same done in less time.
The next goal is to compare different dating sites and decide on one that is likely to suit you and the kind of date you are looking for. That might take a day or two (and Time is the T of SMART goals), but you should have that done in week one. If the site charges a membership fee, satisfy yourself with the security of the site and familiarise yourself with the rates and means of payment. DON'T start off by taking memberships to multiple sites as this will be overwhelming and frustrating unless you have plenty of spare time! DO keep an eye on your credit card statements to make sure the deductions are as expected.
Then you will need to put together a profile. You DON'T have to get it right first time, but you DO have to get it started. When you spend 10 minutes a day at it, by the end of week two you will have spent at least an hour at it, so there needn't be any of these "I can't think of anything to say about myself" moments preventing you from writing a few paragraphs about yourself, and what you are looking for in a potential date.
Your profile needs to be illustrated, as profiles with photographs stand a better chance of getting a reply than those without - particularly for guys, who typically only get a reply to 1 in 3 emails that they send. So set a goal that you will put a photo on your profile on the website, and when you have learnt how to do it, you will be quicker next time, so put on another and another. Preferably you should have a good variety of photos, in different locations and situations. Five pictures of yourself should be a very achievable goal and much better than just one. If you have to take some new photographs, then that is a great opportunity to push your goal forward to ten photos - the next achievable number. You should have achieved this by week three.
Once you have your profile up, and illustrated, it is doing work for you 24 hours a day, and you can start contacting potential dates (we can assume you have been looking at their profiles since day one, as that is why you choose one online dating website over another). Try to keep the emails simple at first, and individual with the member's name in the greeting and some reference to something he/she has said in their profile so that when they read it, it looks like you are talking to them personally. At 10 minutes a day, it would easily be achievable to write one email per day, 7 emails per week. You might get a reply to 2 of those, so you can reply to those emails, and write another few new emails in the following week. Who knows, you might have sorted yourself out a date by Valentine's Day.
While some people believe "The Chase is better than the Catch" and enjoy the ups and downs in beginning relationships, many would rather get to the point and meet people that actually want the kind of relationship that they do. Despite this, many online daters have no idea how to get the maximum benefit from a dating website and deny themselves the dates they aspire to simply due to lack of attention to simple details, or inability to seek advice. Many that progress to a date in real life ruin their prospects for further dates for a different set of reasons. It is almost as if they want to make all the same mistakes that thousands have made before them in order to deny them dating success - which is why they should check out http://www.singleguysupremacy.com/ for further dating advice and tips, the website that gives single guys the edge in dating, romance, and life in general.
