Most of the credit to the origin of mountain bikes is given to a group from Marin County, California, USA during the 1970s. They even had their own races called Repack Downhill. They developed their own version of bicycles though big tires and others were later innovations. But they did spawn all of mountain biking that we know today. A group of black soldiers from Missoula, Montana called the 25th Infantry Buffalo Soldiers (1980's) was one of the earliest references. The Velo Cross Club Parisian made remarkable modifications of having handlebar shifters, frame gussets and some suspension.
The name "mountain bike" first appeared in print in 1966 as "mountain bicycle". The first mountain bikers were downhillers. They would bring their bikes to a mountain carried by a truck, and they would race downhill. The first mass production of bicycles was the Specialized Stump jumper produced in 1982. The introduction of front and rear suspensions can be considered the biggest innovation in mountain biking experience. Front suspension introduced in the late 80's increases control and makes the ride more comfortable. Rear suspension was proven to give riders more control too.
Disk brake is a device that slows or stops the rotation of the wheel while it is in motion. It was discovered in the early 90's. Frames are now made of carbon fiber and advanced aluminum alloy which are light yet strong and corrosion-resistant. The indexed shifting, the threadless headset and better bottom brackets have made bikes longer-lasting and easier to work on. Year after year more innovations were introduced that have resulted in increased performance, longer part life and significant weight reduction.
Today, these bicycles are much lighter, faster, reliable and expensive. The transformation continues and safety is the top priority. Additional gears made bikers travelled terrains and conquered mountain heights.
